How To Design and Build a Raised Bed Garden In Your Yard

Gardening at home can be incredibly rewarding and fun. Whether you like to grow flowers, or you’re looking to feed yourself and your family by growing and preserving food, there’s a lot to learn. The best way to learn many aspects of gardening come from trial and error. You’ll learn to solve a problem once you encounter it, instead of trying to learn and prepare for absolutely everything.

Having said that, a little bit of planning goes a long way when it comes to gardening in your yard. This is especially true when it comes to planning where you’re going to plant things to ensure they’re getting enough light or enough shade, depending on what they need. Another part of this involves choosing where you’re going to plant each piece of vegetation. Are you planing in pots? Are you planting directly in the ground? What about a raised garden bed? Raised garden beds are great because they’re large enough to grow all sorts of different things, and you don’t have to kneel on the ground to get access to them.

How High Are Raised Beds?

Raised beds are usually a couple of feet above the ground, making them easier to reach to remove weeds, or to remove delicious vegetables. They’re also usually wide enough to allow plenty of room to grow, but also easy access from both sides. The required depth of your raised bed planters will depend on what you’re planning on growing, but about ten inches to one foot of soil depth is good for a typical square foot garden. Some people go with more, some go with less. Something to keep in mind is that a lot of extra soil is going to make things a lot heavier. If you build a planet that’s elevated, you’ll need less soil than if you build a frame and fill it in. Some people like to build a fence or wall of sorts, that’s 2-3 feet tall, and to fill it in completely with soil so they get the benefits of a raised bed, but also the benefits of deeper soil.

The video we’re featuring on this page shows you one method of building a garden bed that is raised, but it’s not the only way! Some people will build something similar to this, but with a bottom, that sits on legs. It looks, quite literally, like a bed on a frame. Others prefer to be right in the soil, so that you get something a bit elevated, while still having your soil in the planter connect to the soil in the earth.

The best thing you can do when you’re trying to build a raised garden bed is to look at a few different styles and then to determine which one will suit your needs the best. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, there are some best practices and basics that should be kept in mind no matter what you’re building, but aside from that – you have a lot of freedom to invest the perfect design for your yard.
